Good morning. Rudi Fuchs, who gave Documenta 7 its cool rigor and the Stedelijk its spine, has died at 84.

IN MEMORIAM

Rudi Fuchs, Former Stedelijk Museum Director, Dies at 84

via Stedelijk Museum

Rudi Fuchs, the influential museum director, died in 2026 at age 84. Fuchs directed the Van Abbemuseum, the Haagse Gemeentemuseum, and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and led Documenta 7 in 1982. He championed neo-Expressionism and unconventional exhibition-making, pairing works across styles in his "Couplets" series. At the Stedelijk, his 1993 inaugural exhibition "Het Materiaal" repainted galleries in pastel colors and broke with chronology. He acquired works by Georg Baselitz and other German artists, and supported young Dutch artists. His plan for a new wing by Álvaro Siza was never built, and he stepped down in 2003 after organizing the first survey of Tracy Emin's work.

Fuchs ran the Van Abbemuseum, the Haagse Gemeentemuseum and the Stedelijk, and directed Documenta 7 in 1982; the Stedelijk confirmed the death. Few directors shaped postwar Dutch collections so directly.

The pattern this week

110 stories in seven days, and the drift is institutional: 41 exhibitions against 13 auction results, with €29.6M changing hands across the sales. New York (20), Paris (16) and London (15) still carry the week; Madrid's four is the only southern European showing.

Van Gogh Museum Presents First Eva Gonzalès Retrospective

On October 28, 2026, the Van Gogh Museum announced the first retrospective of Eva Gonzalès (1847–1883), running February 12–June 20, 2027. Titled 'Eva Gonzalès. A New Perspective,' it is organized…

Why it matters
Gonzalès has never had a retrospective; the Petit Palais and Van Gogh Museum are doing it jointly, which means the loans — and the market attention — split between Paris and Amsterdam.
