THE LEAD

Christie's Hong Kong Autumn Auctions of Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art Total HK$737.8M, Led by Three Single-Owner Collections

via Christie's

On October 29, 2026, Christie's Hong Kong presented three prestigious single-owner collections of Chinese ceramics and works of art, achieving a combined total of HK$737.8 million (US$94 million) across three seasons. The Ai Lian Tang Collection – Gems of the Imperial Capital alone realized HK$214.5 million (US$27.3 million), while The Au Bak Ling Collection Volume III brought HK$140.5 million (US$17.9 million). The top lot of the season was The Imperial Qianlong Gold Ewer, which sold for HK$55.8 million (US$7.1 million). The sales attracted strong international participation, with bidding in the room, by telephone, and online.

Three single-owner collections clearing US$94 million in one afternoon is the firmest price signal the Asian market has given this autumn.

Of 79 stories in seven days, 31 were exhibition openings and only nine were auctions — Paris supplied 20 of them, New York 15. The €703.2 million aggregate is carried by a handful of sales, not by a broad market.

Why it matters
The National Gallery's 2027 pairing of a 1973 Frankenthaler with a 1540s Bassano is a curatorial argument, not a blockbuster — and a reminder that Norton Simon lends rarely.
