Meg Onli and Zack Winokur have been selected to curate the 2028 Whitney Biennial, the longest-running survey of American art. Established in 1932 by founder Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, the biennial has featured over 3,600 artists, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Louise Bourgeois, Mark Bradford, Nan Goldin, Jenny Holzer, Edward Hopper, Joan Jonas, Barbara Kruger, Jacob Lawrence, Julie Mehretu, Georgia O'Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, Cindy Sherman, Lorna Simpson, Andy Warhol, and Kara Walker. The exhibition format has evolved from medium-specific annuals to the current biennial survey of all media, in place since 1973.
A curator who co-organized the 2024 edition, paired with a stage director, suggests the Whitney wants 2028 to read less like a survey and more like a season.

Why it matters
A 99-year-old painter still doing press for a Matisse Museum show is the kind of attention that widens the gap between Katz's 1960s canvases and his studio output.
