The Facts
On September 30, 2026, Pace Gallery announced Adam Pendleton's exhibition 'Some Wild Kind of Language,' opening at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam on October 10, 2026. Pendleton, who works from a black ground in a Neo-Expressionist style, will paint the museum's 19th-century stairway black—a first since 1895, according to the museum—and show eight large-scale drawings in gold ink on black paper plus ten abstract paintings, some bearing fragments such as 'We Are Not.' He calls his long-term project 'Black Dada,' a term drawn from Amiri Baraka's 1964 poem 'Black Dada Nihilismus,' and maintains a studio in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn.
The Signal
The Stedelijk commission gives Pendleton a landmark European institutional platform inside one of the continent's first white-box museums. The all-black stairway intervention extends his 'Black Dada' inquiry, and for collectors it signals deepening museum demand for his language-driven abstraction.
