Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Donates Three Glut Sculptures to ARTIST ROOMS, Jointly Held by Tate and National Galleries of Scotland
The Facts
Tate and the National Galleries of Scotland announced that the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation has donated three sculptures from the artist's Glut series to the ARTIST ROOMS collection. The works—G-I Glut (1986), Rasputin's Revenge Early Winter Glut (1987), and Mobile Cluster Glut (Neapolitan) (1987)—are made from salvaged scrap metal and reflect on consumer culture and the 1980s oil surplus. They will debut at Tate Modern in a free display opening September 20, 2026, running through the end of 2027, as part of a larger solo exhibition marking the centennial of Rauschenberg's birth. The show will feature over 25 works from Tate's collection and loans from the foundation, including paintings, sculptures, prints, and film documentation of performances with Merce Cunningham and Trisha Brown.
The Signal
The donation strengthens ARTIST ROOMS, a touring collection established in 2008 that has staged 230 exhibitions at nearly 100 UK venues, attracting over 62 million visitors. For collectors and curators, the gift signals the foundation's continued commitment to placing Rauschenberg's work in public institutions, ensuring broad access beyond the market. The inclusion of the Gluts—rare, politically charged sculptures—adds a critical dimension to the artist's representation in the UK, complementing Tate's existing holdings and extending the centennial momentum. The announcement also highlights ARTIST ROOMS' role as a distribution model for major estates, with recent additions by Helen Chadwick, Isaac Julien, and Roy Lichtenstein reinforcing its reach across regional museums.
