Skira Publishes Posthumous Georg Baselitz Catalogue, Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery Announces
On June 24, 2026, Thaddaeus Ropac gallery announced a new catalogue dedicated to Georg Baselitz, published by Skira as part of its 'Milestones' series. Curated by German art historian and writer Cornelius Tittel, the volume was developed in direct collaboration with the artist prior to his death in April 2026 at age 88. The book covers Baselitz's more than sixty-year career, featuring reproductions of his paintings, engravings, and monumental sculptures, along with texts, photographs, and interviews. It examines pivotal moments such as his 1969 invention of the 'upside-down' portrait and the 1980 Venice Biennale presentation of his controversial work 'Modell für eine Skulptur'.
The Signal
The catalogue offers a comprehensive overview of Baselitz's revolutionary practice, which redefined figurative painting and sculpture since the 1960s. For collectors and curators, it provides a definitive posthumous reference that contextualizes his key formal breakthroughs, including the inversion of motifs and the use of rough, expressive carving. The publication also reinforces Skira's strategic focus on documenting the careers of living and recently deceased masters, following earlier volumes on William Kentridge and Alex Katz.
