The Facts
The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam has partnered with Samsung to make 30 works of modern art from its collection available on the Samsung Art Store, accessible via the Samsung Frame TV. The selection includes pieces by Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Kazimir Malevich, Wassily Kandinsky, Henri Matisse, and others, spanning Impressionism to early abstraction. The collaboration aims to leverage high-resolution display technology to allow viewers to examine the works in detail from home. Rein Wolfs, director of the Stedelijk, said the initiative “brings art into people’s daily lives.” The Samsung Art Store already features works from the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Tate, and MoMA.
The Signal
The partnership reflects a growing institutional strategy to extend museum reach beyond physical galleries through consumer technology platforms. By integrating modern masterpieces into a home entertainment device, the Stedelijk positions itself within a trend of museums licensing digital access to broad audiences, similar to previous deals by the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. For collectors and art enthusiasts, the move signals an increasing normalization of high-quality digital reproductions as a tool for engagement, though it also raises questions about the experience of viewing art outside the museum context. The Stedelijk’s selection of works from its modern European collection offers a curated entry point for new audiences.
