Stephan Balkenhol Installs Opera-Inspired Figures at Salzburg's Residenzplatz and DomQuartier
The Facts
Internationally renowned artist Stephan Balkenhol has created an installation of figures from the world of opera, now on view at Residenzplatz and in the state-rooms of the DomQuartier Salzburg. The project, titled “Là ci darem la mano …” (roughly translated as “there we will join hands”), takes its name from the famous duet in Wolfgang Amadé Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni (K. 527). The figures are intended to become a temporary physical presence within the everyday life of the city, exploring universal human themes such as freedom, power, guilt, jealousy, and love. In parallel, sculptures by Balkenhol from the world of opera are presented in the historic state-rooms of the DomQuartier, strengthening the bridge between music, urban history, and art history.
The Signal
The installation marks a significant public art intervention in Salzburg, a city deeply associated with Mozart and opera. By placing contemporary sculptures in dialogue with the historic Residenz and its state-rooms, Balkenhol invites viewers to reconsider the relationship between classical music, urban space, and modern sculpture. For collectors and curators, this project underscores the growing trend of site-specific installations that engage with cultural heritage, offering a model for how contemporary art can activate historic environments. The choice of opera as a theme also signals a continued interest in narrative and theatricality in contemporary sculpture, a hallmark of Balkenhol's practice.
