Tate Modern to Present UK's First Major Ana Mendieta Exhibition in Over a Decade
The Facts
Tate Modern will open the UK's first major exhibition dedicated to multidisciplinary artist Ana Mendieta (1948-1985) in over a decade, running from July 15, 2026 to January 17, 2027. Featuring over 120 works, the show is arranged thematically through symbolic locations and includes her iconic Silueta Series (1973-80), newly remastered films, rarely seen paintings and drawings, late sculptures, and restaged installations. The exhibition highlights Mendieta's 'earth-body' works, which outline her body in the landscape using natural elements, and explores her experience of displacement after being exiled from Cuba to the United States at age 12. Co-curated by Valentine Umansky, Michael Wellen, and Elsa Collinson, the exhibition is supported by the Ana Mendieta Exhibition Supporters Circle, Tate International Council, and Hyundai Tate Research Centre: Transnational.
The Signal
For collectors and curators, this exhibition marks a significant institutional re-engagement with Mendieta's practice, which has seen growing scholarly and market attention in recent years. The inclusion of restaged ephemeral works and newly remastered films offers fresh insight into her innovative use of materials and her challenge to traditional notions of sculpture, photography, and film. The show's thematic focus on displacement and connection to nature resonates with contemporary conversations around migration and ecological art, positioning Mendieta as a prescient figure whose work continues to influence new generations of artists. The collaboration with the Estate of Ana Mendieta and the research centre underscores Tate's commitment to transnational narratives in modern art.
