Tate Modern Unveils Lina Lapelytė's 'Serendipity Island' Participatory Installation
The Facts
On July 24, 2026, Tate Modern announced a new installation and participatory performance by Lithuanian artist and composer Lina Lapelytė, titled "Serendipity Island." The work transforms the museum's Turbine Hall into a maze-like stage where visitors, guided by 'Conductors,' follow one of six 'scores'—short sets of instructions such as stomping, humming, and swaying—while moving through wooden barriers modeled after airport queue dividers. Participants perform actions in time with an audio soundscape of London field recordings by Peter Cusack, creating overlapping sounds and collective compositions. The commission is part of the UNIQLO Tate Play series, a free programme for all ages, and runs from July 25 to August 31, 2026.

Lapelytė, who won the Golden Lion at the 2019 Venice Biennale for her opera "Sun and Sea," continues her exploration of experimental music, amateur performance, and collaborative creation in "Serendipity Island." The work challenges traditional boundaries between artist and viewer, emphasizing the unifying power of sound. Since its launch in 2021, UNIQLO Tate Play has engaged over 775,000 participants in the gallery alone, with past commissions by artists including Yayoi Kusama and Oscar Murillo.
