Thaddaeus Ropac Presents Kabakov 'Kammermusik' Exhibition in Salzburg
Thaddaeus Ropac gallery at Villa Kast in Salzburg is presenting 'Kammermusik (Chamber Music)', an exhibition of historical works by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov. The show includes paintings by Ilya Kabakov created between 2005 and 2015, as well as installations collaboratively produced by the couple from 1989 until Ilya Kabakov's death in 2023. Each installation combines objects, drawings, paintings, texts, lighting, and sound to create a total installation experience. The exhibition opened on June 7, 2026, with a conversation between Emilia Kabakov and curator Séamus Kealy, director of Oakville Galleries in Canada.
The Signal
The exhibition marks the first time these works are shown in Salzburg, though some have previously been exhibited in Paris and London. Gallerist Thaddaeus Ropac noted the emotional significance of the show, which brings back works from the gallery's history. The Kabakovs have a long relationship with Salzburg, having exhibited there since 1990 and taught at the Summer Academy. Concurrently, Oakville Galleries is hosting the Kabakov exhibition 'Between Heaven and Earth' through September 20, 2026. The presentation underscores the Kabakovs' enduring influence on conceptual and installation art, with their politically and psychologically charged works continuing to resonate with contemporary audiences.
