The Facts
Aguttes’ Design & 20th-Century Decorative Arts auction, set for November 17, 2026, in Paris, will feature a Nuage bookcase by Charlotte Perriand (1903–1999). The modular shelf, first conceived in 1952, reflects Perriand’s exploration of flexibility in interior design, with horizontal shelves supported by metal spacers. In the late 1950s, the design was adapted for a commission from Miferma to furnish the mining town of Cansado, combining sipo wood with aluminium or lacquered sheet steel. Public viewing is scheduled for November 14, 16, and 17.
The Signal
The sale underscores the sustained demand for Perriand’s work at auction, where her functional designs are increasingly treated as collectible modern art. The Cansado provenance gives this example particular historical depth, linking the bookcase to Perriand’s larger architectural practice. For collectors, the piece represents both a usable design object and a documented chapter of post-war corporate modernism.
