The Facts
On October 7, 2026, Aguttes highlighted the renovated Maison Guimet at the Guimet Museum in Paris. The former Hôtel d’Heidelbach, built in 1913, reopened in May 2026 after extensive renovation. Designer Constance Guisset preserved the Belle Époque wood panelling, moldings, and marble fireplaces while adding contemporary light fittings and textile installations. The house now displays a collection of Chinese ceremonial furniture, including imperial lacquered Coromandel screens and cabinets, as well as porcelain and cloisonné enamel pieces. A ground-floor room is dedicated to the art of tea, and the Japanese garden features a tea house built in 2001.
The Signal
The Maison Guimet offers an intimate setting for Asian art that could not be accommodated in the main museum's permanent galleries. For collectors and curators, the venue represents a thoughtful integration of contemporary design with historic architecture, enhancing the display of large-scale imperial furniture. The use of a historic mansion for specialized collections reflects a broader museum trend of creating immersive, context-rich exhibition spaces.
