The Facts
Ryoji Ikeda's 2018 video installation 'point of no return' has been acquired by the Fundação de Serralves in Porto, Portugal. The work, an edition of three, consists of a DLP video projector, computer, speaker, and HMI lamp with variable dimensions. It joins the permanent collection of the museum, which is known for its contemporary art program. Almine Rech, the gallery representing Ikeda, announced the acquisition.
The Signal
The acquisition signals a major institutional validation for Ikeda, whose data-driven digital works have gained international acclaim. It also strengthens Serralves' holdings in new media art, reflecting a broader trend of museums investing in technology-based works. For collectors, it underscores the increasing market and curatorial interest in digital installations.
