Artcurial to Auction Jean-Jacques Rotthier African and Oceanic Art Collection During Parcours des Mondes
Artcurial, in partnership with Lempertz, will present the African and Oceanic art collection assembled by Belgian collector Jean-Jacques Rotthier from the 1970s in Paris on 8 September during Parcours des Mondes. The sale follows the 100% sell-through of Rotthier’s Egyptian antiquities collection for nearly €1.5M. The ensemble comprises nearly 100 works, primarily from the Democratic Republic of Congo, including four Songye statues and a rare janus Kuyu figure, with estimates ranging from €20,000–€30,000 to €40,000–€60,000.
The Signal
The offering signals sustained collector demand for historically significant Central and West African sculpture at the top end of the market. Private collections of this coherence, assembled through direct engagement with specialists rather than speculation, continue to set benchmarks for institutional and private buyers seeking provenance and quality. The dispersal provides a rare opportunity to assess current pricing levels for Songye and Luba works that have remained largely off the market for decades.
