The Facts

On June 29, 2026, the Bangkok Art Biennial announced that Leiko Ikemura will participate in this year's edition. The biennial, founded in 2017, transforms public spaces across Bangkok—including temples and heritage sites—over four months, aiming to position the city as Southeast Asia's leading contemporary art destination. Ikemura, known for luminous paintings, drawings, watercolours, glazed terracotta sculptures, glass, and ceramics, studied at Osaka University of Foreign Studies (1970–1972) and the University of Fine Arts in Seville (1973–1978). Recent exhibitions include Motherscape at Albertina, Vienna (2025), the Bienal de São Paulo (2025), Light on the Horizon at HEREDIUM, Daejeon (2024), and Our Planet at The National Art Center, Tokyo (2019).

The Signal

The inclusion of Leiko Ikemura signals the Bangkok Art Biennial's continued strategy of blending international contemporary artists with local heritage sites, reinforcing its role as a platform for cross-cultural dialogue. For collectors and curators, Ikemura's participation—following major institutional shows in Vienna and São Paulo—underscores her rising profile in Asia and beyond. The biennial's focus on Rattanakosin cultural heritage alongside urbanism offers a distinctive context for her work, potentially increasing its visibility among Southeast Asian audiences and institutions.
