Bonhams Asia Week New York Totals $12.5 Million at New U.S. Headquarters
Bonhams March Asia Week New York at its new U.S. headquarters at 111 West 57th Street concluded with a total of US$12.5 million across six live sales. The Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art sale on March 23 realized US$4.83 million, led by a Pair of Rare and Magnificent Carved Imperial Zitan Corner-Leg Tables for US$889,500. The Fine Japanese & Korean Art sale on March 25 achieved US$2.87 million, headlined by an early impression of Katsushika Hokusai's Under the Wave off Kanagawa, which also sold for US$889,500. Additional results included US$1.54 million for Chinese Paintings, Calligraphy and Prints and US$2 million for Indian, Himalayan & Southeast Asian Art.
The Signal
The results signal sustained collector demand for museum-quality Asian art across categories, with 99% sell-through in the Wald snuff bottle collection underscoring strength in niche segments. Bonhams' relocation to the Steinway Building provides expanded exhibition space that juxtaposes historic architecture with contemporary sales, enhancing visibility for Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Himalayan works. The performance of imperial Zitan furniture and Hokusai prints indicates timing may favor consignments of comparable high-end material ahead of the fall season.
