The Facts
Bonhams will offer the personal archive of filmmaker Stanley Kubrick in a live auction at its London saleroom on February 3, 2027, with an online auction ending February 4. The sale, drawn directly from the Stanley Kubrick Film Archives, includes iconic props, scripts, equipment, and personal possessions, such as the original Star Child prop from '2001: A Space Odyssey' (estimate £600,000-800,000), the Grady Sisters production-used costumes from 'The Shining' (estimate £40,000-60,000), and Kubrick's director's chair (estimate £8,000-12,000). A free public exhibition of the full sale will run at Bonhams New Bond Street from January 18 to February 3, 2027, with preview exhibitions in New York (October 16–23, 2026), Los Angeles (November 2–6, 2026), and Paris (November 16–24, 2026). Claire Tole-Moir, Head of Popular Culture at Bonhams, called the auction a landmark opportunity to explore Kubrick's creative process and acquire a piece of film history.
The Signal
The auction marks the first time Kubrick's personal archive has come to market, giving collectors access to artifacts from a filmmaker whose influence extends beyond cinema into art, design, and fashion. The estimates, ranging from a few thousand to nearly a million pounds, reflect the strong market for film memorabilia, particularly objects from '2001: A Space Odyssey' and 'The Shining'. Pre-sale exhibitions across major art capitals underscore the crossover between film heritage and the art market, where production materials increasingly command prices akin to fine art.
