California African American Museum Acquires Two Works at Frieze Los Angeles
The Facts
The California African American Museum (CAAM) has acquired two works for its permanent collection from Frieze Los Angeles. A painting by Jessica Taylor Bellamy, presented by Anat Ebgi, and a wall-based sculpture by Zenobia Lee, presented by Sea View, were selected through the CAAM Acquisition Fund, now in its third year. The acquisitions were chosen by CAAM executive director Cameron Shaw and Los Angeles-based collector V. Joy Simmons. Frieze Los Angeles 2026 runs from February 26 to March 1 at Santa Monica Airport.
The Signal
These acquisitions reinforce CAAM's nearly 50-year mission to champion emerging Black artists in Los Angeles. Shaw notes that Bellamy's work evokes an apocalyptic vision of the city's recent wildfires, while Lee offers a fresh contemporary perspective on history. The museum's strategic focus on conceptually rigorous pieces that balance contemplation with calls to action signals its continued investment in local artistic voices and critical dialogues around community and care.
