Centre Pompidou Holds Major Works by Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne
On June 11, 2026, the Centre Pompidou highlighted its collection of major works by Claude Lalanne (1925–2019) and François-Xavier Lalanne (1927–2008). The artists met in 1952, began collaborating in 1956 at Impasse Ronsin in Paris and held their first joint exhibition titled Zoophites at Galerie J in 1964. Their output drew from Brancusi, Surrealism and Art Nouveau, producing organic plant forms and jewellery by Claude alongside François-Xavier’s monumental animal furniture such as Troupeau de moutons and Rhinocrétaire.
The Signal
The Centre Pompidou’s holdings of Lalanne pieces reflect institutional recognition of their fifty-year career that bridged art and design. Collectors including Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Bergé and Georges Pompidou acquired works, while auction results such as the $33.5 million sale of a 1974 mirror series in April 2026 demonstrate sustained market interest in their output.
