Centre Pompidou Marks 50 Years of Youth Programming, Preps Francilien and 2030 Reopening
The Facts
On August 17, 2026, the Centre Pompidou highlighted its pioneering youth-education initiatives as it prepares for the opening of the Centre Pompidou Francilien in spring 2027 and a major renovation reopening in 2030. Founded in 1977, the museum was a trailblazer with the Atelier des enfants (1972–1976), which used sensory workshops—touch, taste, smell, sight, hearing—to engage children with modern and contemporary art. Led by Danièle Giraudy, the atelier later evolved into the Galerie des enfants (1992) and the Studio 13/16 for teens (2010), and in 2022 the Station 0.2 opened for infants. The museum's approach, prioritizing hands-on practice before viewing works, became a model for cultural mediation worldwide.
The Signal
The announcement underscores the Centre Pompidou's enduring commitment to young audiences, a strategy that continues with the Constellation program and the new Francilien site, designed in consultation with local residents. While other institutions have adopted similar sensory and participatory methods, the Centre Pompidou claims to still devote the largest dedicated space and resources to children and teens among French museums. The upcoming Pôle Nouvelle génération will consolidate these offerings for ages 0–20, reinforcing the museum's role as a laboratory for audience engagement even as it prepares for a multi-year closure.
