Christie's Cuts Carbon Emissions 39% Since 2019, New Report Details Progress
On June 30, 2026, Christie's announced its 6th Environmental Impact Report, revealing a 39% reduction in carbon emissions against its 2019 baseline year. The reductions spanned shipping, travel, IT, and publishing, though total emissions increased 16% year-on-year due to the ongoing renovation of its New York headquarters at Rockefeller Center, a three-year project that accounted for 54% of 2025 emissions. The company remains the only international auction house with Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated goals to reduce emissions by 90% by 2050. Shipping emissions dropped 62% from 2019, business travel fell 67%, and building emissions decreased 62% from the baseline, despite a 4% rise from 2024 partly linked to off-site sales at Gooding Christie's.
The Signal
The report signals Christie's continued commitment to sustainability in an industry where logistics and luxury consumption are high-impact. For collectors and consignors, the emphasis on lower-carbon shipping and packaging may influence packing and transport decisions, while the renovation of Rockefeller Center points to long-term investment in energy efficiency. Christie's co-sponsorship of the Gallery Climate Coalition's first Stocktake Report and its hosting of London's inaugural Art + Climate Week underscore the company's role in shaping industry-wide standards, potentially affecting how galleries and auction houses are evaluated on environmental credentials.
