The Facts
Christie's will offer 'Anthology of Design: Masterworks from a French-American Collection' in a single-owner sale on December 9 in New York. The collection of more than 100 objects, assembled over two decades by a transatlantic collector, features works by François-Xavier Lalanne, Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand, and others. The top lot is a set of three Lalanne 'Moutons de Laine' exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1967, estimated at $3-5 million. Other highlights include a rare Perriand table from 1930 (estimate $600,000-800,000) and a Prouvé bicycle (estimate $60,000-80,000). Selected works will tour Tokyo, Paris, and New York before the sale.
The Signal
The sale underscores the growing market for 20th-century design and the value of collections built with foresight. The collector's early acquisition of now-iconic designers demonstrates a prescient eye that anticipated current market trends. The global tour and the inclusion of pieces with distinguished provenance, such as the Lalanne sheep from the collection of gallerist Alexandre Iolas, add to the sale's significance for collectors and institutions.
