The Facts
On October 20, 2026, the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) announced 'Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier: Rococo Goldsmith in Focus,' the first exhibition to unite an extraordinary group of the artist's works. The free exhibition opens Sunday, October 25, 2026, and runs through Sunday, March 14, 2027, in the Julia and Larry Pollock Focus Gallery. It centers on CMA's renowned silver tureen (1735–38) made for the 2nd Duke of Kingston-upon-Hull, paired with a recently acquired gold box (1728–29) made for Queen Maria Anna of Neuburg of Spain, acquired via Christie's in May 2026. Loans from the Louvre, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Bibliothèque nationale de France, and the Smart Museum of Art in Chicago include a rock crystal ewer once owned by Marie Antoinette and a candelabrum from the same ducal set.
The Signal
The exhibition underscores Meissonnier's status as a revolutionary goldsmith whose few surviving works in precious metals make this concentration especially significant for decorative-arts scholarship. The gold box—one of only two known with his maker's mark—and the tureen's recent conservation and 3-D modeling reflect CMA's deepening investment in Rococo material, a niche market with limited yet high-quality supply. The loans from Paris and Chicago also signal a growing transnational institutional interest in Meissonnier, whose career challenges rigid guild systems resonate with contemporary debates about artistic innovation and market access.
