Born in Cologne, Germany, David Ostrowski studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under the tutelage of Albert Oehlen. His practice emerged from the tradition of German abstract painting, gaining significant attention for its focus on the physical act of painting and the limitations of the medium.

Ostrowski is best known for his F series, which utilizes minimal, layered surfaces to interrogate the history and potential of the canvas. His work often incorporates accidental marks and sparse compositions, reflecting a deliberate engagement with the concept of failure and the critique of artistic production.

Currently, Ostrowski serves as a Professor of Painting at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe. His recent work continues to be showcased in major institutional settings, including a 2026 solo exhibition titled The Critic at Kunstverein Heilbronn, which highlights his ongoing exploration of self-referential critique.
