Born in Japan, Fujiko Nakaya gained international prominence through her involvement with the Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.) collective, a group that bridged the gap between artistic practice and technological innovation. Her early career was instrumental in establishing video art as a legitimate medium in Japan, where she served as a key promoter and practitioner.
Nakaya is best known for her signature fog sculptures, which utilize high-pressure pump systems to release water micro-droplets into the environment. These site-specific installations transform architectural spaces by creating ephemeral, atmospheric clouds that interact with the surrounding light and structure.
Her work continues to receive significant institutional recognition, including a 2026 commission for the Bourse de Commerce — Pinault Collection. This installation, titled Cloud #07150, demonstrates her ongoing exploration of the intersection between natural phenomena and built environments within the museum's Rotunda.
