Artist Profile

Heidi Bucher

Heidi Bucher is known for her latex-based sculptures that peel translucent skins from architectural surfaces, exploring the intersections of body, domestic space, and gender.

Biography

Heidi Bucher was born in 1926 in Winterthur, Switzerland, and attended the School for the Applied Arts in Zurich. Her early formation in applied arts led her to a practice that interrogated the relationship between architecture, the body, and private space.

Bucher's signature medium is latex, which she used to create works that embalm clothing and, most famously, peel thin, skin-like layers from doors, walls, and floors. These translucent skins capture the imprint of domestic, often feminine-coded spaces, transforming them into ghostly sculptures that speak to individual and collective memory.

In August 2026, Lehmann Maupin announced its representation of the Heidi Bucher Estate, signaling renewed international focus on her career. Her works continue to be recognized for their innovative use of material and their feminist exploration of intimate architecture.
