Artcurial Art Week Auctions Total €20.7M, Led by Basquiat and Van Dongen
Artcurial's Art Week auctions in Paris on October 24 achieved a combined total of €20,687,410 (including fees), with two sales dedicated to modern and contemporary art.
Cornelis Theodorus Maria 'Kees' van Dongen was born in Delfshaven, Netherlands, and studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam. His early work was influenced by the Hague School and symbolism, evolving into a rough pointillist style before he moved to Paris and became a central figure in Fauvism.
Van Dongen's breakthrough came with his participation in the controversial 1905 Salon d'Automne exhibition, after which his style grew increasingly radical in form and color. His most important works from 1905–1910 focus on nightlife, depicting dancers, singers, masquerades, and theatre, and he gained a reputation for his sensuous, often garish portraits, especially of women.
Recent coverage highlights a 1959 portrait of Brigitte Bardot by van Dongen, estimated at €800,000–1,200,000, which will be auctioned by Artcurial in 2026 after being hidden for over sixty years. The auction also includes 18 additional works from the artist's estate.
