Born in Santiago, Chile, Roberto Matta studied architecture and interior design before moving to Paris in the 1930s. There, he joined the Surrealist movement, working closely with André Breton and Salvador Dalí. His early work transitioned from architectural drawing to the creation of fluid, abstract compositions that bridged the gap between the subconscious mind and physical reality.
Matta is best known for his large-scale canvases characterized by vibrant colors, geometric forms, and a sense of deep, shifting perspective. His technique, which he termed inscapes, sought to visualize the internal landscape of the human psyche. Throughout his career, he utilized oil painting to depict dynamic, often chaotic environments that reflected his interest in science, technology, and social philosophy.
His influence extended across both Europe and the Americas, particularly impacting the development of Abstract Expressionism in New York during his wartime exile. Matta remained a prolific artist throughout his life, maintaining a significant presence in the international art market and major museum collections, with his works continuing to be featured in high-profile Surrealist auctions and retrospectives.
