The Facts
The Fondation Louis Vuitton will open a major exhibition, 'Gustave Fayet, Collector - Designer: Icons of Modern Art,' on October 9, 2026, running through March 8, 2027. The exhibition presents over 250 works from Fayet's collection, now dispersed, alongside 375 of his own creations, many restored and never before exhibited. Highlights include 10 paintings by Vincent van Gogh, 78 works by Paul Gauguin, and 88 by Odilon Redon, as well as works by Degas, Cézanne, Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir, Morisot, Signac, Bonnard, Vuillard, and Matisse. The show is the result of years of research, involving 64 international institutions and 71 private collections.
The Signal
Gustave Fayet (1865-1925) was a pioneering collector and artist who championed the avant-garde, yet has become largely forgotten. This unprecedented exhibition, occupying all spaces of the Fondation Louis Vuitton, aims to restore his significance. It reveals how Fayet's collecting, creating, and decorative arts practice were intertwined, and highlights his role in bringing modern art to the forefront. For collectors and curators, the show offers a rare chance to see masterpieces from a long-dispersed collection, and underscores the growing institutional interest in overlooked figures of early modernism.
