The Facts

On October 21, 2026, TEFAF announced museum acquisitions made at its 2026 Maastricht and New York fairs, led by the Art Institute of Chicago's purchase of Lavinia Fontana's 'Christ Expelling the Merchants from the Temple,' offered by Trinity Fine Art and the first Fontana painting to enter that collection. The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum in Wisconsin acquired Pablo Picasso's 1943 'Paloma'; the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam bought Sonia Delaunay-Terk's 'Robe simultanée' through Galerie Zlotowski; and the Van Gogh Museum added Virginie Demont-Breton's 'L'homme est en mer,' its third painting by a woman. Other purchases include a 14th-century marble kneeling figure at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the first-century 'Vase of Nero' at the Yale University Art Gallery, a Cuno Amiet portrait at the Getty, a 'Jarre avec serpent' at the Musée d'Orsay, a wax portrait at the Rijksmuseum, and two Minneapolis Institute of Art paintings of a father and son separated in 1885 and reunited at Maastricht. TEFAF Maastricht ran March 14–19 and TEFAF New York May 15–19, 2026, drawing more than 600 museum directors and curators and 130 patron groups.

The Signal

The buying round shows TEFAF functioning as a pipeline from specialist dealers to encyclopedic museums, with institutions using the fairs to close gaps in their holdings, notably around women artists — a market segment drawing renewed curatorial focus. For collectors, the acquisitions reinforce the value of museum-quality rediscoveries such as Demont-Breton and Delaunay-Terk, while the Minneapolis father-and-son reunion demonstrates the fair's role in provenance scholarship and collection building.
