The Facts

On October 21, 2026, TEFAF announced major museum acquisitions from its 2026 fairs in Maastricht (March 14–19) and New York (May 15–19). The fairs, covering 7,000 years of art, attracted over 600 museum directors and 130 patron groups. Acquiring institutions include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Louvre, the Rijksmuseum, the National Gallery London, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Hong Kong Palace Museum, among others. Works sold include a table by François Linke and a painting by Lavinia Fontana.

The Signal

The acquisitions highlight TEFAF's unique position in facilitating museum acquisitions across a wide range of collecting categories, from antiquities to contemporary design. Maarten ten Holder, TEFAF's director general, noted that cultural exchange and heritage preservation are core to the fair's mission. Beyond sales, TEFAF's Museum Restoration Fund and Curators Course provide ongoing support to institutions, strengthening the fair's role as a year-round partner to the museum world.
