The Facts

On September 25, 2026, Galerie Max Hetzler announced that Elmgreen & Dragset's sculpture 'Eight', 2026, has been acquired by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. The site-specific commission for the museum's sculpture garden extends the duo's pool motif; the garden, revitalised by artist-architect Hiroshi Sugimoto, is due to reopen on October 31, 2026. The artists' work is also featured in a solo exhibition at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt am Main and in 'Interactions' at Bundeskunsthalle Bonn. Their installation 'K-BAR', 2024, a pavilion with a bar and a painting by Martin Kippenberger, has been unveiled in Khao Yai Art Forest.

The Signal

The Hirshhorn acquisition places Elmgreen & Dragset within a major US institutional collection at a moment when the museum's renovated garden is set to draw renewed attention. The simultaneous solo show at the Städel and inclusion in the Hamburger Bahnhof's collection presentation underline the artists' standing across Europe. For collectors, the museum commission and the Kippenberger homage signal sustained institutional and art-historical relevance, reinforcing demand for their large-scale installations.
