The Facts
On Friday, October 23, the Getty Center will screen the documentary 'Nova '78' and host a performance by no wave artist Julia Heyward. Heyward, who co-emceed the 1978 Nova Convention that the film documents, will perform her electronic-vocal monologue from the event. The no wave movement, an avant-garde and anti-commercial community in late 1970s and early 1980s Downtown New York, has recently seen renewed interest through publications and documentaries. The Getty Research Institute holds The Kitchen Archive, which includes materials from that era.
The Signal
The screening and performance underscore the Getty's commitment to preserving avant-garde performance history and highlight the growing recognition of no wave's influence on contemporary multimedia art. For collectors and curators, the renewed attention to artists like Heyward, who recently had exhibitions in Germany, signals a potential market shift toward this previously overlooked movement dominated by women.
