The Facts

On October 28, 2026, the Getty Foundation announced New Interpretations, a grant initiative that awards $2.7 million to 11 museums and arts organizations worldwide for visitor-centered approaches to art interpretation. Grantees include the Walker Art Center, Queens Museum, Leeum Museum of Art with M+, Manchester Museum, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Fowler Museum at UCLA, First Americans Museum, Denver Art Museum, Baltimore Museum of Art, Australian Centre for the Moving Image, and the Association for Art Museum Interpretation. Projects include multilingual interpretation in Spanish, Hmong and Somali at the Walker, and captioning software for time-based media at ACMI. Getty has supported collection interpretation and audience research since 1986.

The Signal

The initiative reflects a growing emphasis in museums on accessibility and audience engagement, prioritizing experimentation and visitor research over static wall text. It also creates a platform for institutions to share best practices, particularly in language access and Indigenous knowledge, signaling to funders and professionals that interpretation is a core institutional priority.
