Getty Publications to Release Photographic History of Los Angeles Civil Rights Movement
Getty Publications has released Marching West: The Los Angeles Civil Rights Movement in Photographs by Karin L. Stanford and Mark Speltz. The $45 volume presents over 100 images, some previously unpublished, drawn from the Tom & Ethel Bradley Center at California State University, Northridge, the Getty Research Institute and other Southern California collections. It documents civil rights activism in Los Angeles through prints by photographers including Harry Adams, Howard Bingham, Charles Brittin, Joe Flowers, Vera Jackson and Charles Williams. The book examines connections between local and national movements and the role of photography in advancing the fight for Black equality.
