Guggenheim New York to Present Philippe Parreno and Douglas Gordon’s 'Zidane' During 2026 World Cup
The Guggenheim New York is presenting the two-channel video installation Zidane, a 21st century portrait by Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno from June 11, 2026 to July 19, 2026. The ninety-minute work, acquired by the museum in 2006, follows French soccer star Zinédine Zidane during a match on April 23, 2005, using footage from seventeen synchronized cameras at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. It screens continuously in the Peter B. Lewis Theater as the sixth installment in the museum’s Collection in Focus series.
The Signal
The dual-projection format pairs the theatrical version with raw footage from one camera, creating moments of synchronization that address celebrity and collective memory. Curated by Nat Trotman, the presentation references historical portraiture by Goya, Velázquez and Warhol while marking the artwork’s twentieth anniversary alongside the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
