Hauser & Wirth Artist Glenn Ligon Partners with Artistic Noise for Youth Self-Portrait Project
Glenn Ligon, an artist represented by Hauser & Wirth, collaborated with Harlem-based nonprofit Artistic Noise on a self-portrait printing project for system-impacted youth. Ligon invited 12 participants ages 14–22 from Artistic Noise's Art and Entrepreneurship program to visit his exhibition at Hauser & Wirth New York, 18th Street, and the Studio Museum in Harlem, where they discussed his work and created digital self-portraits. The group then completed eight artmaking sessions at Artistic Noise's studio, using cyanotype, oil pastels, and charcoal to layer their portraits with personal text and symbols. The resulting works will be displayed and sold at Artistic Noise's youth art showcase in Harlem on July 17, 2026, with 100% of proceeds going to the young artists.
The Signal
The collaboration highlights a growing trend among major galleries to invest in community-based educational initiatives that engage underrepresented youth with contemporary art. For collectors and curators, it underscores Glenn Ligon's longstanding commitment to social practice and the role of institutions like the Studio Museum in Harlem in fostering access. Proceeds from the showcase provide direct economic support to young artists navigating the juvenile justice and foster care systems, reinforcing art's potential as a vehicle for agency and professional development.
