Tribute Hauser & Wirth

The Facts

Hauser & Wirth and 303 Gallery have confirmed the death of artist Mary Heilmann, who passed away on August 14, 2026, on Long Island, New York, at the age of 86. She is survived by her nieces and nephew. Heilmann was known for her vibrant, playful abstractions that blended formal rigor with improvisation, spanning painting, sculpture, and ceramics over five decades. Her work has been the subject of major solo exhibitions at institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Whitechapel Gallery, London; and the New Museum, New York, and her 'Starry Night' series was on long-term view at Dia Beacon from September 2023 through October 2025.

The Signal

Heilmann's death marks the loss of a pivotal figure who redefined Minimalist and Postminimalist painting by infusing it with joy, emotion, and a bold color palette. Iwan Wirth, president of Hauser & Wirth, called her 'our first love,' noting that the gallery began collecting her work in 1994 and mounted its first exhibition with her in 1997. Jessica Morgan of the Dia Art Foundation emphasized that Heilmann's practice 'reshaped how we might think about Minimal or Postminimal art,' bringing freedom and gesture to a field once defined by restraint. Her legacy, cemented by a 2024 documentary and a facsimile edition of her memoir, continues to influence contemporary abstraction.
