Hauser & Wirth Launches Education Lab Inspired by Eileen Harris Norton Collection in Los Angeles
Hauser & Wirth Downtown Los Angeles has opened the Education Lab titled ‘Art in Community: From Studio to Collection’ in conjunction with the exhibition ‘Destiny Is a Rose: The Eileen Harris Norton Collection’. The program was developed with graduate students from the University of Southern California, California State University Los Angeles and ArtCenter College of Design, and centers on studio visits, research and an exchange of original artworks. A resource library and a film produced with California State University’s Community Impact Media course feature Eileen Harris Norton in conversation with Mark Bradford, while additional recorded reflections come from Charles Gaines, Glenn Ligon, Amy Sherald and Gary Simmons.
The Signal
The initiative underscores collecting as a sustained practice of advocacy and stewardship rather than isolated acquisition. By framing each exchanged work as the seed of a future collection, the lab positions emerging curators and artists as mutual caretakers of one another’s practices. The project extends Hauser & Wirth’s existing network of Education Labs across Menorca, Somerset, Downtown Los Angeles and Chillida Leku, reinforcing institutional investment in long-term community relationships that shape both artist support and collection-building.
