The Facts

Yvonne Jordan, a teacher and lead practitioner at Central Foundation Girls’ School in Tower Hamlets, London, has been named the inaugural recipient of the Slade Director’s Studio Summer Residency. The residency is part of a three-year partnership between Hauser & Wirth Learning and UCL Slade School of Fine Art, created for practising artists who teach in secondary schools. Jordan, whose practice uses photography and collage to explore identity and pedagogy, will receive a four-week residency beginning in late July 2026, providing dedicated studio space at the Slade and culminating in an open studio event in London. The programme arrives as the Cultural Learning Alliance reports declining secondary art provision and research indicates most art teachers have considered leaving the profession due to lack of resources and recognition.

The Signal

The initiative addresses a critical gap in support for artist-teachers, who often work without dedicated time, space, or professional development. By embedding contemporary art practice within secondary education, Hauser & Wirth and the Slade aim to strengthen pathways between classrooms and the cultural sector. The gallery’s broader learning programme, which includes educators’ private views and partnerships with organisations such as the Royal Drawing School and South London Gallery, reflects a growing institutional commitment to sustaining arts education. The late Phyllida Barlow, a long-time Slade tutor, serves as a precedent for how artist-teachers can shape generations of emerging artists.
