Hauser & Wirth Publishers Joins noisé Magazine's First Reading Room in Shanghai
Hauser & Wirth Publishers is participating in noisé magazine's inaugural reading room in Shanghai, a curated space designed to foster focused reading in an age of digital distraction. Located at SUHEHAUS in the Jing'an District, the reading room's first chapter takes inspiration from a phrase used to describe gallerist Marian Goodman—'une main de fer dans un gant de velours'—and brings together publications by nearly 100 women artists, writers, and thinkers. Hauser & Wirth has contributed materials on gallery artists including Lee Lozano, Maria Lassnig, Cindy Sherman, Susan Rothenberg, Eva Hesse, and Roni Horn, alongside all six issues of noisé magazine. The space also features photography, music, and evolving inspiration boards contributed by artists, creating a living archive of how artists engage with the world.
The Signal
The initiative underscores the growing role of gallery-affiliated publishing programs in shaping discourse beyond the sales floor. By embedding itself in a reading room that privileges depth over volume, Hauser & Wirth aligns its editorial arm with a curatorial ethos that values slow engagement and the recovery of out-of-print or hard-to-find materials. The focus on women practitioners—from canonical figures to experimental voices—also signals a deliberate institutional statement, echoing broader market and museum efforts to redress gender imbalances in art historical narratives.
