The Facts
On October 1, 2026, Centre Pompidou announced that Josèfa Ntjam is one of four nominees for the 2026 Prix Marcel Duchamp, France's most prestigious contemporary art award. The winner will be revealed, during Paris Art Week. For the prize, Ntjam presents a 28-minute film exploring the 'protein of forgetting' and Cameroonian history, featuring a conversation between a father and son during a tarot reading with animated sequences on slavery and independence. She also created a 'chorale of sculptures'—ceramic and wood pieces fitted with transducers that vibrate to produce sound. The exhibition of all nominees is held at the Musée d'Art moderne de Paris, a change from previous years at Centre Pompidou.
The Signal
The Prix Marcel Duchamp, established in 2000 by Adiaf, has launched careers of artists like Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster and Tatiana Trouvé. Ntjam's nomination underscores her rising profile in the French art scene, with her multimedia practice blending biology, mythology, and history. The shift of the prize exhibition to the Musée d'Art moderne de Paris signals a new institutional partnership, broadening the award's visibility and reinforcing its role as a bellwether for mid-career French contemporary art.
