The Facts

Kim Yun Shin Punches In, a documentary about Kukje Gallery artist Kim Yun Shin, premiered at the 31st Busan International Film Festival, held October 6–15, 2026, in the Wide Angle – Documentary Showcase. Directed by Lim Sun-ae and produced by Production Pied-Joints, it is the first installment of They Will Live Long, a series on women artists born before the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement. The film follows Kim — born in 1935 in Wonsan, based in Argentina for nearly four decades from age 49, and back in Korea since returning in 2023 — as she continues making wood and stone works in her nineties. Kim became the first contemporary art world figure to walk BIFF's opening red carpet, and she joined Lim Sun-ae for a post-screening talk on October 10. Related projects include a biography from Ahn Graphics in June, a 48-minute version slated to air on EBS in 2027, and a planned exhibition by photographer Eun Chun, provisionally titled Kim Yun Shin's Atelier; theatrical release is set for May 2027.

The Signal

The Wide Angle selection signals widening institutional and film-world interest in Kim, part of a broader Korean reappraisal of women artists whose careers were built across the Americas and Asia. For collectors, the clustering of a documentary, biography, television version, and planned exhibition suggests sustained, coordinated work to establish her legacy and market record. That infrastructure could broaden demand for Kim's sculpture and reinforce her position within postwar Korean art and the Kukje Gallery program.
