Kunsthaus Zürich Awards Pop-Up Project Space to Two Collectives for Summer 2023
Kunsthaus Zürich has selected two collectives—'summer of something' and 'Clubhaus – Home of the New'—to occupy its temporary 'KunstXausZürich' project space from June 9 to October 7, 2023. The initiative, launched in April, drew over 90 applications from artists, designers, and curators. A jury including Daniel Baumann (Kunsthalle Zürich), Giovanni Carmine (Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen), Esther Eppstein, Raphael Gygax, Mirjam Varadinis, and Ann Demeester (chair) chose the winners. 'summer of something' will run from June 9 to July 29, featuring art projects, food, and drink from Oerlikon-based spaces, while 'Clubhaus' (August 8–October 7) will transform the space into a venue blending tradition with innovation, including performances, talks, and an immersive installation. The opening on June 9 coincides with Zurich Art Weekend and is free to the public.
The Signal
The selection reflects Kunsthaus Zürich's strategy to revive its 19th-century roots as an artist-run 'Künstlerhaus' by fostering experimental, community-driven programming. By ceding its restaurant to non-commercial collectives, the museum signals a shift toward decentralized, participatory models that engage local scenes—here drawing from Zurich-Oerlikon's grassroots art ecosystem. For collectors and curators, the pop-up offers a rare glimpse into emerging Swiss practices outside institutional walls, potentially surfacing new talent and collaborative formats that could influence future programming.
