Barbican to Stage Major Robert Ryman Retrospective 'The Real Thing' in London
The Barbican Centre announced on June 26, 2026, details of 'Robert Ryman: The Real Thing', the first significant UK exhibition of the American painter in over 30 years. The retrospective, running from October 8, 2026, to February 28, 2027, features over 60 works spanning Ryman's career from the mid-1950s to the 2000s, including the monumental 'Surface Veil II' (ca. 1970), shown in London for the first time since 1993. The exhibition is supported by lead supporter Kenneth C. Griffin & Griffin Catalyst and the Panoptès Collection, and will be accompanied by a 400-page catalogue published by Pre-Echo Press.
The Signal
The exhibition is a key highlight of the Barbican's Autumn 2026 season and continues the institution's strand of major painter retrospectives following shows on Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lee Krasner, Alice Neel, and Noah Davis. For collectors and curators, this retrospective reaffirms Ryman's critical position as a painter who transcended abstraction and representation, focusing on materiality and perceptual experience. The installation, hung without wall text to encourage direct visual engagement, signals a curatorial commitment to experiential viewing that may influence how minimalist and conceptual works are presented in institutional settings. The accompanying catalogue, with contributions from scholars and artists, positions Ryman's practice within contemporary discourse, potentially driving renewed market interest in his work.
