Kunsthaus Zürich: Raphael Gross Review Finds Bührle Collection Needs Deeper Provenance Research
On July 10, 2024, the City and Canton of Zurich and the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft announced that historian Raphael Gross's review of the Bührle Collection found considerable further research is required, especially on works in Jewish ownership before World War II. The 167-page report, released June 28, 2024, noted that while the Kunsthaus Zürich adopted a new provenance strategy in March 2023, the Foundation E. G. Bührle Collection has not met those standards. The collection has been on long-term loan at the Kunsthaus since October 2021, with the loan agreement running until 2034. The parties have agreed to discussions toward sustainable solutions.
The Signal
The review marks a turning point for the Bührle Collection, a major private collection with a contested wartime history. For the Kunsthaus, it reinforces its commitment to rigorous provenance standards and may influence other institutions handling Nazi-era claims. The foundation's continued ownership and responsibility for restitution, along with the cost of further research, highlight the challenges of long-term loans of disputed works.
