Exhibition Kunsthaus Zürich

The Kunsthaus Zürich will stage 'Vilhelm Hammershøi. The Eye That Listens', the first comprehensive museum retrospective in Switzerland devoted to the Danish artist (1864–1916), from July 3 to October 25, 2026. Hammershøi, often called the 'Vermeer of the North', is known for sparse interiors, muted cityscapes, and figures depicted from behind, rendered with subtle gradations of subdued color. The exhibition, curated by Jonas Beyer and Sandra Gianfreda, includes less-known portraits, cityscapes, and landscapes, as well as works by Jacobus Vrel, Adolph Menzel, and Michaël Borremans to place Hammershøi in a broader art-historical context. The show was developed in cooperation with the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid and is supported by Albers & Co AG, the Fondation Etrillard, and the International Music and Art Foundation.

The Signal

The retrospective signals growing institutional interest in Hammershøi, a national icon in Denmark but still relatively underrepresented in international museum surveys. By drawing comparisons to James McNeill Whistler, Giorgio Morandi, and contemporary painter Michaël Borremans, the show positions Hammershøi within a lineage of artists who prioritize formal reduction and atmospheric silence. For collectors and curators, this exhibition reaffirms the market and scholarly value of Nordic modernism, while the novel thematic focus on music and 'the dimension of silence' offers a fresh framework for valuing Hammershøi's work beyond his best-known interior scenes.
