Exhibition Lisson Gallery

On Friday, June 19, 2026, Shirazeh Houshiary will be in conversation with Sir Gabriele Finaldi at The National Gallery, London, as part of the Friday Lates series. The discussion will focus on Houshiary's practice in relation to 17th-century Spanish artist Francisco de Zurbarán, whose still-life painting 'A Cup of Water and a Rose' (1630) inspired her digital animation 'A Cup and a Rose' (2019). In 2008, Houshiary was commissioned to design the East Window at St Martin-in-the-Fields, citing Zurbarán's 'The Veil of St Veronica' as a source. The event will also feature choral performances by St Martin's Voices.

The Signal

The talk underscores Houshiary's engagement with Old Master traditions, a recurring theme in her work. It also provides context for the National Gallery's 'Zurbarán' exhibition, highlighting the enduring influence of 17th-century Spanish still life on contemporary practice. For collectors, the discussion signals continued institutional interest in artists who bridge historical and contemporary idioms.
