The Facts

The Kunsthaus Zürich has secured a landmark endowment of CHF 30 million from Marianne and Martin Haefner to fund internationally significant exhibitions. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed to establish the 'Förderstiftung für bedeutende Ausstellungen des Kunsthauses Zürich' (Foundation for Major Exhibitions at the Kunsthaus Zürich), which will hold permanent capital. The long-term goal is to finance at least one major exhibition per year, with returns on investment and additional patron contributions fueling sustainable growth. The foundation is expected to be established in the course of 2025.

The Signal

The endowment model, rare in Switzerland, mirrors those at institutions like the Louvre and the Werner Abegg Foundation. This strategic investment strengthens the public-private partnership underpinning the Kunsthaus, providing an independent, growth-oriented funding source. Director Ann Demeester noted the endowment creates space for ambitious content, while Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft President Philipp Hildebrand called it an exemplary model of sustainable private cultural support. The foundation is open to additional supporters to expand its impact.
